(While cooking and sharing Haitian foods with my college roommates from Central America and South America, I learned many things. I made a few discoveries. When we compared our foodstuffs, we found out they are just the same things but they come with different names)

For example: Start with these two ingredients, green plantains, not the bananas we eat!

Vocabulary - Vocabulaire - Mo Nouvo (New words)

Bannann Peze - Haitian twice-fried green plantains (Use the green plantains to make bannann peze, not the bananas)
Bananes Pesées (French)

Lwildoliv / Lwil doliv - Olive oil (use it to fry the smashed plantain...add a little bit of salt)

Ripe Banana and Plantains:

Fig (ripe banana) ak Bannann (green plantains)

My Central American, Peruvian, Venezuelan College mates helped me get this information:
Tostones is bannann peze. It is a snack or side dish in Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.

Patacones is bannann peze in some Central American countries. My Venezuelan friend told me it is known as Patacones there.
Notes: You will need a tostonera to flatten the plantains before their second frying. According to my Dominican friend, any flat surface, a glass or a small plate will do too. I have even seen her using a bowl to flatten the plantain chunks.

Married to Napoleon Bonaparte's right-hand man, General Leclerc, Pauline did not have much of a choice other than to board the ship that would seal her fate at St Domingue. Josephine de Bauharnais, her sister-in-law, won that round.

Having been combat-hardened by serving at one time or another under the flags of the Spanish and English forces battling the French for the control of the richest colony in the world, the few black rebel leaders (General Maurepas, Henri Christophe, Alexandre Petion, Capois La Mort, Biassou, Jean Francois, Dessalines, etc) quickly realized that they had to enter the phase of a total war - total change from the bottom up or a revolution.

On that cauldron that was St. Domingue (currently Haiti), the most beautiful woman of Europe had to devise ways to occupy herself. Pauline set out to conquer the men or soldiers who were fighting in her husband's army. She joined the high Parisian society in order to throw lavish parties in Le Cap and Port-au-Prince. But when she caught something and got sick, she let her friends introduce her to a slave voodoo priest and Voodoo priestess who came to perform an exorcism on her body. She confessed that she secretly loved some of the black generals, Toussaint and others, for their courage and determination.

Suspicious of his wife's dangerous liaisons and feelings for Toussaint L'Ouverture, Governor-General Leclerc invited him to dinner where the black general and his men were ambushed. Embarking the ship that would take him away, Toussaint L’Ouverture, the First of the Blacks, proclaimed, “In capturing me, you have only cut down the trunk of the tree of Black people’s freedom. It will spring up again by the roots because they are deep and numerous..”. The Black rebel leaders had to act upon the prophecy of Toussaint who was ambushed, summarily judged, condemned at a Fort-de-Joux tribunal and subsequently sent to the cold mountain of France to die. In his last days, he only had the loyalty of his servant who had been with him along. He made sure to hold his head and ease the passing of that great man, lover of freedom and equality, and a formidable avenger of the New World.

"Nous sommes tous les enfants de la Liberte," Said Jean-Jacques Dessalines who was at one time or another an English, Spanish, and French citizen before becoming a Haitian after freeing and renaming St. Domingue.

Authors, Charles J. Desmangles and Kevin Levin, have done a great job writing this novella in Haitian Creole, Spanish, and English. Bouki and Malis Turned Boat People:Bouki ak Malis Pran Kanntè. It is based on the plasticity and richness of the Haitian folklore. Two of the most recognizable characters of Haitian folktales play a central role in this story.

In this novella, the authors show Bouki's desperation and push factors contributing to his agreement with a sleek, sophisticated local criminal and people smuggler / trafficker known as 'Captain Katastwòf Natirèl.' Bouki was deep in debts because he wanted to maintain a lifestyle he could not afford on the meager catches of a fisherman. Caught and deported several times by U.S. Border and Coast Guard, Captain Katastwòf Natirèl (Captain Natural Catastrophe) was on a black list. Bouki thought he was smart enough to pull this trip on his own. He refused to be known as the butt of his brother's jokes, a simpleton, a fool. He did not want Malis, his intellectual brother, to know about the details of that trip. All the while, Malis never hesitated to put him down and make him realize that he needed his expertise, language skills, and critical thinking.

Charles J. Desmangles and Kevin Levin interweave elements of the Haitian culture in this remarkable Haitian Creole, Spanish, English novella. Things must have been really harsh in Haiti if these two famous characters of the Haitian folklore finally decide to leave the country on a perilous raft to cross illegally to the U.S. shores. When faced with an upcoming storm, Captain Katastwòf Natirèl led his crew to Santiago, Cuba to seek temporary refuge. He forced everybody to learn Spanish in order to pass for Cuban refugees. Will Booki, Malis and Captain Katastwòf Natirèl make it to the dry grounds of Florida?

This story is set against the backdrop of Haiti's devastated agriculture, political upheavals, insecurity, presence of UN troops or Minustah, series of natural disasters such as hurricanes and 2010 earthquake, barren lands and tree-less mountaintops causing widspread floodings, destroyed ecology, infrastructures and educational institutions with a local population that depends more and more on imported goods and used clothes euphemistically known as 'pèpè.'

In this novella, the authors also implicate and relate the complicity of the catholic church whose priest, Father Francois, refuses to use Haitian Creole and French in his mass in his dogged efforts to cater to a dwindling but rich and powerful group of Latin language enthusiasts, les Bourgeois Commercants Mulattres (native Haitians of Syrian, Lebanese and.. descent). He did not heed Professor Malis' advice to start leading mass in Creole just like the Voodoo priests and protestant churches do all over the country with great success. What's worse is that Father Francois never said a word or raisee his stubby pinky finger against the clandestine smuggling and chaperoning of Haitian children who took these rickety boats to get reunited with their parents in Miami. Sister Marie Lafontant made her money chaperoning children and paid the priest under the table without counting her generous tithes to the church.

"Bouki and Malis Turned Boat People - Bouki ak Malis Pran Kanntè" is a book that will make you laugh and cry in the same sentence or paragraph. This book should be a required reading for anybody who wants to understand Haiti and the 'Boat People' phenomenon. Definitely, it should be required reading for any NGO, tourist, international workers in Haiti. It should be a required reading for any sociology students. This novella is edited by Prof. Joseph J. Charles

These are the choruses sung by the international choir and headlined by the top newspapers and magazines of the world! Christopher Columbus (Colombo) and his Spanish cohorts subjugated the native Arawaks and Tainos to forced labor in the extraction of gold and other precious metals. The indigenous inhabitants of Haiti or Bohio were consequently decimated by hard labor, rapes, and diseases! By the end of 1500s, the news about Mexico's gold mines were more sensationalistic. The Spaniards packed up and left for Mexico. They did not have the time or the equipment to turn your innards to make you cough up your last treasures. Mother Haiti, you wanted to reward future generations who would watch over you despite all the drama and sufferings your land has gone through.

Hairless (treeless), your tall mountains kept deep secrets of beauty that men and women from all over the world covet. Far too many centuries, you have been made fun of because of your apparent poverty. Far too many years have found you begging the international community in order to feed your children forced to pile up in the capital, rested on major fault lines. The fatal hurricane only took 5 seconds to change things. Tectonic plates were moving and exposing your true and precious beauty!

May a new dawn arise for the men and women whose cries of hunger, famine, and fights for justice and dignity are heard the plains of Artibonite, the valleys and coastal ranges to the peaks of the northern mountains whence Henri Christophe, Jean Jacques Dessalines, Francois, Biassou climbed down. These mountains that sheltered the runaways fed not only the remaining indigenous inhabitants of the island but also the new black gold from Africa. European powerhouses were going to carve Hispanola. French would fight Spaniards who would fight English colonists. The majority of black slaves and the minority of Affranchis were watching. They would soon realize that it was in their interest to unite and go against the small groups of plantation owners, bankers, and business people who were keeping them separated based on privileges, skin color, and social positions.

Oh Haiti, how long did it have to take you before bringing some level of joy to the faces of Haitians stricken by a series of hurricanes, floods, and quake? Oh Mother Haiti, how long will it take for your sons and daughters to break the cycle of poverty and indifference?

How long will it take for your children spread all over the world to get back to your bosoms? How long will it take for them to want to stay home, work hard to see the fruits of their hard labor and take care of your grandchildren?

May the prophecies come true! On wings of eagles (malfini), they will be brought back to participate in the development of your once fertile land! With the expertise and knowledge acquired in the best centers of higher learning, they will be back to watch the mining of your resources. They will be proud of being your sons and daughters. In harmony, they will watch and prevent the exploitation of these rare resources.

Once again, you will stand up with your head held high. Suffering has given you enough wisdom. Compassionate, you will treat others with respect and dignity because you know what it was like to be the butt of jokes for far too long.

Once again, Haiti, you will reclaim your name, the Pearl of the Antilles (La Perle des Antilles). On your own terms, you will invite and welcome the rest of the world onto your shores. You will accept cooperation that is not masked by abuse and servile exploitation. You will open your arms to receive experts and workers who will help you rebuild hospitals, schools, and a strong business sector that will benefit all your children.

Haiti, you will pay attention to all these corporations, multinational companies that will come running to sniff around your skirts. Once again, you are beautiful and proud! Be careful with their charms that may leave your coffers empty and plunge you in a worse economic situation. Their track records do not say much about their fair business practices. Wherever they have been, they leave behind ecological damages, pain, and regret.

In this episode, you will learn about the construction of exclamatory sentences. You will learn about sentences that express strong feelings in Creole. They use an exclamation. In the previous episode (episode #1), you learned about sentences that make a statement, express a command or ask a question.

For example: Ala bon sa bon pou aprann yon lang tankou Kreyol! - How good it is to learn a language such as Haitian Creole!

Other Examples: Ala bon Bondye bon! - How good God is!; Ala gran Bondye gran! - How great God is!

Ala pwisan Bondye pwisan! - How powerful God is!

Here is the structure in Creole: Ala + Adjective or Determiner + Subject + repetition of the adjective or determiner!

You will also review the question words in various exercises.

In this episode, you will also have a review of the HC alphabet and pronunciation. The ebook will provide you with a list of words that accompanies each nasalized or non-nasalized sound. You will also have an exercise to repeat the words correctly.

Finally, you will end this episode with a text that you can listen to. The text is titled, "Mayor Midi's Car (Truck) - Machin Majistra Midi a"

It is a funny story about how his driver and mechanic cared for his truck and how one day it ran out of gas and got stuck in a Thozin, Grand-Goave mud pit. Passersby had to help him push it out, not before they complained about how he had never given them a ride to Petit-Goave, Haiti. Nonetheless, they realized he was a good man who worked hard for the recognition of their city, a great representative of their town in the political affairs of the country.

This is a hot book, sort of a la Zane erotica series, but the only difference is that it is a book of poems, reviews, and short essays on important subjects and topics ranging from dating, mail brides, lonely American and Canadian men and women, falling in love after divorce, the dos and dont's of dating, the new dating scene, whether it is appropriate to hire a dating coach, where to go to meet single parents, the lows of divorce court, infidelity, dumb cheating with smartphones, fertility issues, getting caught sexting while married or in a relationship, narcissism to social media preaching and building instant gratification and a me-generation etc.

Ruth Anne Lovemore and Christopher Luis Charlemagne have done a good job addressing the above mentioned topics and much more in this new book.
