As long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by freedom fighters and human rights activists. They are men and women who seek to redress the wrongs of their societies. I am talking about men such as the various African kings who fought hard to turn back the tides of slavery and occupation of their homeland, Abraham Lincoln who fought to keep the Union intact and ultimately emancipate the American slaves, Toussaint Louverture, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Alexandre Petion, Henri Christophe, Jean Francois Biassou and many others who fought to liberate St. Domingue (Santo Domingo) and create the first black republic in the world, Haiti, Martin Luther King Jr. Rosa Parks, and countless others who fought in the Civil Rights Movement. The list of those who sacrificed their lives, possessions, and families for the freedom of the People, their people and complete strangers, is very long.

Nelson Mandela follows in the footsteps of all those heroes. He knew that South Africa could treat her sons and daughters better. He also knew that there were many other men and women from all ethnic and racial backgrounds who were feeling oppressed by the nationalist agenda. If the majority was not free, the minority was not either. Finding time and devising ways to redress the wrongs and indignities directed to the dark-skinned members of the society would have to take place over time. Little did he then know that the personal cost of his commitment would be very high and arduous!

Nelson Mandela knew that he had to give up everything to launch himself into the Freedom Struggle. He figuratively became a sacrificial lamb for the cause. Many others stopped bullets with their own skin and body only to depart the struggle at a very young and promising age. The non-violent revolution was not fought without bloodshed orchestrated by the apartheid regime. Wrongful accusations and imprisonments were common. And Nelson Mandela and many of his comrades would spend more than 27 years in prison. Many South Africans and sympathizers all over the world were also suffering along with the convicted ANC members. After all, if one was in jail, all were in jail. With hammers, they crushed stones. They were sent to the lime quarry. Their determination to the cause could not be crushed despite the forced labor they endured. Despite the situation, they managed to study and educate themselves at the Robben Island University (the prison).

In this booklet, you will read about the true measures and characters of men and women who survived the most brutal attacks against their persona but who coped and ended up surviving only to finally triumph. The oppressed and the oppressor alike are robbed of their humanity. The warders as well as the prisoners were not free. So many times, the warders had to defer to Nelson Mandela and his group in many areas.

(While cooking and sharing Haitian foods with my college roommates from Central America and South America, I learned many things. I made a few discoveries. When we compared our foodstuffs, we found out they are just the same things but they come with different names)

For example: Start with these two ingredients, green plantains, not the bananas we eat!

Vocabulary - Vocabulaire - Mo Nouvo (New words)

Bannann Peze - Haitian twice-fried green plantains (Use the green plantains to make bannann peze, not the bananas)
Bananes Pesées (French)

Lwildoliv / Lwil doliv - Olive oil (use it to fry the smashed plantain...add a little bit of salt)

Ripe Banana and Plantains:

Fig (ripe banana) ak Bannann (green plantains)

My Central American, Peruvian, Venezuelan College mates helped me get this information:
Tostones is bannann peze. It is a snack or side dish in Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.

Patacones is bannann peze in some Central American countries. My Venezuelan friend told me it is known as Patacones there.
Notes: You will need a tostonera to flatten the plantains before their second frying. According to my Dominican friend, any flat surface, a glass or a small plate will do too. I have even seen her using a bowl to flatten the plantain chunks.

"1802-1803: Pauline Bonaparte’s St Domingue Stay, Parisian High Society and Voodoo Exploits (A Short Historical Novel by Kevin Levin)". Fire! Fire Everywhere in St. Domingue! Married to Napoleon Bonaparte's right-hand man, General Leclerc, Pauline did not have much of a choice other than to board the ship that would seal her fate at St Domingue. Josephine de Bauharnais, her sister-in-law, won that round.

Having been combat-hardened by serving at one time or another under the flags of the Spanish and English forces battling the French for the control of the richest colony in the world, the few black rebel leaders (General Maurepas, Henri Christophe, Alexandre Petion, Capois La Mort, Biassou, Jean Francois, Dessalines, etc) quickly realized that they had to enter the phase of a total war - total change from the bottom up or a revolution.

On that cauldron that was St. Domingue (currently Haiti), the most beautiful woman of Europe had to devise ways to occupy herself. Pauline set out to conquer the men or soldiers who were fighting in her husband's army. She joined the high Parisian society in order to throw lavish parties in Le Cap and Port-au-Prince. But when she caught something and got sick, she let her friends introduce her to a slave voodoo priest and Voodoo priestess who came to perform an exorcism on her body. She confessed that she secretly loved some of the black generals, Toussaint and others, for their courage and determination.

Suspicious of his wife's dangerous liaisons and feelings for Toussaint L'Ouverture, Governor-General Leclerc invited him to dinner where the black general and his men were ambushed. Embarking the ship that would take him away, Toussaint L’Ouverture, the First of the Blacks, proclaimed, “In capturing me, you have only cut down the trunk of the tree of Black people’s freedom. It will spring up again by the roots because they are deep and numerous..”. The Black rebel leaders had to act upon the prophecy of Toussaint who was ambushed, summarily judged, condemned at a Fort-de-Joux tribunal and subsequently sent to the cold mountain of France to die. In his last days, he only had the loyalty of his servant who had been with him along. He made sure to hold his head and ease the passing of that great man, lover of freedom and equality, and a formidable avenger of the New World.

"Nous sommes tous les enfants de la Liberte," Said Jean-Jacques Dessalines who was at one time or another an English, Spanish, and French citizen before becoming a Haitian after freeing and renaming St. Domingue.

Three adventurous and well-off Haitian girls, Lili, Lala, and Lila set out to rescue a servant girl named Tifani Restavèk from a mean neighbor family who mistreats her and makes her do all kinds of forced labor while their own children, especially KansonFè IronPants, tease her while watching her work her heart out in the stiffling Caribbean sun. These three girls go to private catholic schools in Port-au-Prince. Way before the quake that hit Haiti, the three girls devise a plan to start reading stories to Tifani while she stands by the fence. They want to teach her to read and write. In general, Restaveks (servant boys and girls whose parents can not take care of them and economically forced to let them go live with well-off city dwellers) do not expect to be treated well and go to school. Will these girls ever even get close to Tifani to tell her about their plans? A miracle would have to happen first. All of Tifani’s work is for nothing. Her only reward is more work and belittling. Tifani can not go to school or even take reading and writing lessons. Her supervisors, the Mesye and Madanm of the house would not let that happen. Then, on January 12, 2010, a 7.1 quake hit and destroyed Port-au-Prince and its nearby communities in less than 35 seconds. Lili, Lala and Lila’s mission changes. They set out to find and rescue Tifani from under the mountains of rubble. Will they ever find her alive? Is the quake the miracle that will make her supervisors, Mesye and Madanm KansonFè, set her free? Tifani may as well find her freedom right in the midst of the rubble that covers her frail body.

Here are a few things this book will help you learn: Haitian Fruit, Vegetables and meals names, different types of meat, seafood, popular greetings, common expressions and phrases, verb markers etc. This book also introduces you to the Hiatian Creole grammar. For example, the use of articles shows some of the unique features of the Haitian Creole language. There is an indefinite article, which is used in front of the noun it modifies, and a definite article, which comes after the noun it modifies and changes form based on the sounds in that noun. Examples: Kay la - the house; ban an - the bench; bannann nan - the platain etc. Haitian Creole pronouns have both long and short forms. Examples: M for Mwen etc.. In addition to functioning as the subject of a sentence, pronouns can be placed after nouns to indicate possession. Examples, kay mwen - my house; liv li - his/her book etc.

This textbook is gradually introducing you to the structure of the language. It also provides you with cultural notes and explanations.
